The Risk of no Risk – North West
September 5, 2017 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

A step by step approach to developing a risk-based program for school aged children
For so many of us playing outside in nature with no adults in sight and taking risks was an everyday part of our childhood. But what we once took for granted has changed to such an extreme that we are now seeing children spending more time indoors than any other time in history due to rapid urbanization, increased screen time and a growing culture of risk aversion, with the over-protecting of children becoming more and more prominent throughout Australia.
Children deserve and benefit from challenges and adventures that include risk. Their self-esteem grows, along with their physical and mental abilities as they negotiate risk appropriate for their personality and development.
Whether you are an educator, manager or CEO, there is a responsibility to develop strategies for school aged children to learn about and experience risk.
This workshop will explore:
- why children need to take risks
- how to support risk taking in OSHC
- adventurous play and learning
- adult’s roles and responsibilities
- developing a Benefit Risk Assessment
- strategies for bringing families, managers, schools and educators on board.
